Criminal - VICTMIZED (1994)

Criminal se formó en Santiago de Chile a fines de 1991 por Anton Reisenegger (guitarra y voz) y Rodrigo Contreras (guitarra). Anteriormente Reisenegger había liderado a Pentagram, uno de los grupos Death Black Metal más importantes del underground mundial, cuya influencia es reconocida hasta hoy por bandas como Napalm Death y Dismember. Semanas después se les unieron J.J. Vallejo (batería), quien había tocado en un grupo previo junto a Contreras, y Juan Francisco Cueto (bajo). La banda debutó en vivo como teloneros de Kreator frente a 4.000 personas, en Abril de 1992. Dos demos grabados ese año comenzaron a circular en la escena local, y principalmente el segundo, titulado ‘Forked’, recibió muy buenas críticas en revistas internacionales como Terrorizer (Inglaterra) y Aardshok/Metal Hammer (Holanda).
El año siguiente Criminal realizó un intenso calendario de presentaciones en todo Chile, y en 1994 grabó su primer álbum, “Victimized”, en forma independiente. Poco tiempo después la banda abrió dos de los shows de Sepultura en Santiago, ante un total de 8.000 personas. “Victimized” vendió 1.000 copias en las tres semanas siguientes a su publicación, lo que llamó la atención de la multinacional BMG, que adquirió los derechos del disco y fichó al grupo. El álbum fue publicado en Argentina, México y Japón, y los videoclips de ‘New Disorder’ y ‘Self Destruction’ comenzaron a rotar fuertemente en el programa "Headbangers" de la cadena MTV Latino. Ese año Criminal salió por primera vez fuera de Chile, presentándose en Buenos Aires y Montevideo. En 1995 el grupo viajó a México para tocar en un festival de Metal Latinoamericano en Ciudad de México y Guadalajara. A la vuelta de este viaje, J.J. Vallejo se retira de Criminal, siendo reemplazado rápidamente por Jimmy Ponce (ex-Slavery). En 1996 el grupo abrió los shows de Motorhead y Bruce Dickinson en Santiago, y fue publicado un EP en vivo titulado “Live Disorder”.
